Holy Spirit in Cork city!

After a week on retreat and going to see the ‘hot house flowers’ last night I woke up exhausted this morning.

image

I felt guided to driving into Cork city and after an hour or more in a coffee shop I went on one of my ‘Holy Spirit’ walks…this is when I feel a supernatural force around me and am guided where to go. After 5 minutes I ended up at the franciscan friary! I am not familiar at all with Cork so it was nice of God to guide me there. In I went and I literally cried for an hour as I felt the love and pain the Lord has for the mentally unwell. This is part of the intercession that I usually go through before praying with people.

A few people passed me by. After an hour a lovely blond haired lady asked if I was ok as she saw the tears which I couldn’t hide. I could tell she was from the travelling conmunity and inwardly I smiled that she was the only one to stop as many settled people say unkind things about the travellers.

image

After a few minutes of sharing she stopped and said ‘ there is something very different about you, a peace in your eyes, are you going to be a priest?’. I told her my life story and of the healing gift God gave me. She asked me if I’d pray for her.

I closed my eyes and saw her pushing a pram as a single mother, I sensed the rejection from her family. She was quite amazed and if I’m honest so was I even if I should be used to these things at this stage. I prayed with her. Sadly her child who was now grown up was in hospital with a mental illness. We prayed for his healing through the intercession of my o old buddy Pio!

image

She then asked me for some money and I confess getting a bit cynical but inside I felt to stay calm. I told her that I’m sort of a,traveller too and that financially I hadn’t much. I gave her ten euro and five sterling.

As we continued to talk she introduced me to her partner who was at the back of the Church and so I prayed with him too. We had a great chat. Finally I had to go and she offered to give me back all the money. I told her to keep it anyway but instead to say a prayer for me. They both prayed the most beautiful prayer for me!!

After all that the Holy Spirit guided me to ‘subway’ to eat a sandwich where I am now. I wonder what God has for me next!

What a strange life I have and yet how blessed I am to be the Lord’s instrument. It makes all the suffering worthwhile!

Appreciate your prayers. Keep the faith, be encouraged, God is real!

How the Lord loves the poor, the misunderstood. Give us your heart Jesus!

Spiritual Renewal

Once upon a time there was a man of prayer in who’s city there was a drought. He was on his way to a prayer meeting to pray specifically for rain. On his way out his little daughter shouted at him ‘Daddy, you forgot your umbrella’!!

image

So often it’s true that our words and deeds do not back up what we say we believe. We tell God how much we trust him and then 5 minutes later we spend an hour on the phone telling our best friend how scared we are. We tell Jesus how much we love our enemies and we tell our enemies how much we dislike them!!

Great is the power of what we say ‘Out of the mouth flows the abundance of the heart’ and so we can never guard our tongues enough!

Now there are 2 ways to approach this, one is to be constantly watchful and say the ‘right thing’. However this can feel very fake and more than likely people will pick up the emptiness of your words if they are not coming from a place of love!

image

The second is spiritual transformation or renewal. Our thoughts come from within, our reasoning mind is often just the mere filter! As we allow the love and grace of God to shine on our insides, our insides transform! Yes, the very source of our being and the source of our thought life transforms and just like that we will start having both godly thoughts and feelings for those around us. Our speach and actions will come from the heart and so flow in harmony with our faith. The change happens over time from the inside out as our spirits literally get transformed!

Just like getting a sun tan, we can’t force it. However we can dispose ourselves to getting one simply by sitting in the sun. And so it is with God, we can never reflect enough on simply how much he loves us, we can never rest enough in this love and let it seep into our hearts, our ‘inner man’. It is this very love that transforms us. Hardened hearts become soft, hate turns into love, anger into peace, pride into humility, fear to faith and so on…

image

Padre Pio once said ‘people search for God in books but people find God in prayer’. Of course books have their place but ultimately they are only a signpost to a person, to God!

So yes, let us be transformed by the renewal of our hearts and minds and let us be watchful of our words and actions constantly praying that God will bring them into allignment with the desire for Him in our hearts!

In short, let’s spend more time letting God love us!

One day at a time!

Prayer from the heart

Recently it has struck me how many people find it difficult to pray or how they feel empty in their prayer life. As I pondered this I got the words ‘heart, heart, heart’!

It was in the heart that Jesus was pierced, from His heart the blood and water poured out and indeed (for catholics) the prayer given by St Faustina speaks of the heart…

‘o blood and water that gushed forth from the heart of Jesus, I trust in you for ….’

And of course the rays come from the….heart!

image

Similarily for us that are catholic another great devotion is to the sacred heart of Jesus.  Again the heart!

If Jesus mentions His heart so much, surely it is because he wants to touch our hearts, even if they be made of stone like corners of my own!

image

And so it is that Jesus invites us to a heart dialogue where we share our hearts with Him, the good and the bad.

Jesus invites us to share all areas of our lives with him. There is nothing too taboo that He can’t handle, nothing too shameful, nothing too big or frightening. Remember He died for our sins!!

As we share from the heart our relationship with God simplifies, it becomes real and authentic, we feel comfortable to be ourselves and it is through this process that our hearts get healed over time and that we come to know our real need for God and aware of how he changed us.

Let us open our hearts even more today and approach God’s mercy with Holy.Boldness asking Him to replace our heart with His!

Jesus, change my heart into your heart that I may love as you love!

The lesson I learnt today. God’s blessings don’t always look like blessings at the time but with the clarity of hindsight we can see Him there!!

image

For a while now my front tyre has been losing a bit of air. It was on my list of things to do! Last Wednesday I had a 4 hour journey which took me to a remote retreat centre hidden in the mountains. I arrived safely literally on roads with sheep and grass in the middle!

image

Today I decided to go for a drive as 2 days of silence was getting to me. I meandered off and found a coffee shop in the middle of nowhere. Funny enough the owner had once upon a time considered entering religious life in that very community. I knew in my heart that I was supposed to be there and that talking to her was no coincidence.

Mass was at 5 and so I left at about ten to 5 to find my front tyre flat as a pancake! Before I might have got angry with God or considered this to be some sort of spiritual attack but something in me knew better. I knew that it was a blessing….

A blessing it didn’t happen in the middle of nowhere with only sheep, a blessing it didn’t explode while I was driving which happened me years ago….and a blessing that I now had to go back into the shop and talk to this lady again!

I changed the wheel and mass being well over I said my goodbyes and drove off. There is a beach nearby and so I said I’d have a look. I went for a walk and a bit of a jog and after finding the local store I decided to come home.

About 3 minutes from my destination I spotted the Church.of the local parish (seperate from the retreat centre). I said I’d pop inside to say a prayer and to get mass times for the week. Little did I realise that it was bang on 7pm and there was a mass just about to begin at that very moment!! I just sat there and smiled and couldn’t help but thinking that Jesus was showing off a little!!

image

So that puncture was a blessing in disguise. Had I got angry I may have just driven home and missed all the blessings that were to follow!

Incidently I forgot to pay for the coffee so I’ll have to go back! God works in mysterious ways! Let us do our best to trust in God even when it seems like things are going wrong. He might have other plans that are far better than our ones!

Homosexuality…exorcism?

A few days ago I was talking to a lovely nun. Without knowing anything about my story the topic of homosexuality came up (it has been on irish media a lot over last few days in relation to seminarians).

image

Full of love and compassion she told me that she had heard from a quite well known priest that homosexuality could be cured by an exorcism!

My heart sunk and I felt an immense sadness. Firstly I saw the love in her eyes and I knew that she was only saying what she heard. However I couldn’t but feel so sad at the thought of somebody with homosexual orientation hearing that.

Imagine going up to a gay individual and telling them that they need an exorcism!! Talk about rejection!! Imagine if they did have an exorcism and after they still have homosexual desires…..what then?!!

Speaking from my own personal experience this is most certainly not the answer. Homosexuality can be far more complicated than this and above all homosexual people need what every other person needs….to be loved, respected and welcomed into the Church the way they are.

Unfortunately there are a lot of fears and misunderstandings in Church circles about gay people with the extreme being that gays go to hell. These attitudes do not tie in with the Gospel, with a God of love, mercy, patience. I used to think that and it almost cost me my life.

Fortunately there are many excellent people in the Church too. If anybody is reading this and has been wounded by people in Church in this area then for what it’s worth I would like to say sorry to you. God loves you, He has a place for you and there is a place in the Church for you. Please forgive those that have offended you as each member of the Church has their own shortcomings.

Holy Spirit, help us build bridges of love between the Church and gay community. Help us break down hate and judgements and let love, forgiveness, respect and charity flow.

Bless you all! Pray for me!

Trust in God for coffee!!

The other day God called me on a little adventure. One might be surprised to know that after years of such adventures I was still quite nervous and finding hard to trust God!

image

I was on my way out to mass when the Holy Spirit whispered in my heart to leave my wallet at home. Usually I like to get myself a coffee after mass (habit I picked up in Oz) so I was a little cheesed off at this idea from God!

Choosing to obey I trotted off to mass at the local convent. Grumbling to God that I had no breakfast I felt the spirit say that the nuns would invite me in!! Now I’ve discerned religious life before but I jokingly said to God that I’d never discerned becoming a nun!!

After mass a nun did approach me and invited me for breakfast. She was so kind and gentle. We had a great chat even if she did ask me if I was doing the leaving cert (highschool) which I was very surprised at as I hadn’t shaved for.a few days….i think Jesus likes joking with me about this.

After my breakfast I was asked to lunch by somebody else who had heard me give a talk and we prayed together after which I was given a little money with which I bought myself….a coffee…

Why did I doubt?!! Anyway, moral of the story and message I wanted to share is that God works with us all in spite of our doubts and we should do our very best to trust accepting that it is hard at times! He works with us in our humanity and just like I got my coffee in the end, He doesn’t want to take from us all the things we enjoy but rather He wants us to put Him first and trust that He will look after us!

Jesus I believe, help my unbelief!!

Shame

Yesterday I wrote about Fear and today as I prayed I felt to write about Fear’s first cousin….Shame!

image

I say ‘first cousin’ because I believe that fear is related to shame.

Shame locks a person in a prison of self blame. Often people feel ashamed of what they have done or what has been done to them both when they were to blame and not!

We may well feel a certain shame when we think of the not so glorious moments of our past but even more crippling is when we feel shame for things that were not our fault.

In my own life I felt terrible shame for having  let down my family, for having had mental health issues and for struggling with homosexuality. I felt that it was my fault and that I had disgraced them and if I’m honest I still have moments of those feelings.

But others feel shame for other reasons, shame around personal appearance, job, education…..

The common thread is an underlying belief that says ‘i am not good enough’.

Jesus came to free us from shame, Jesus loves us where we are and how we are. It is true that His love does change us but it is important to get the order the right way up……

He loves us first and changes us second. He never says ‘if you change then I’ll love you’ but rather He says ‘ let me love you the way you are and I’ll make you more and more beautiful’.

Please God give us the grace today to receive your love in the areas of our hearts that are filled with shame.

Fear

I once heard fear being described as False Expectation Appearing Real and over the last few weeks I’ve being growing and battling with some of my own fears!

Fear is the opposite of faith. Faith moves us to trusting in the Lord and resting in His love and promises. Fear moves us to not trusting, to filling a soul with doubt and anxiety and all the.things that might go wrong!

Some of the best known fears are what we call phobias. Fear of heights or of spiders. They can be totally irrarional and yet crippling!

In the spiritual life it can be fear of God, fear of our sins or of our struggles, fear of rejection, fear of failing, of not being perfect….At a,rational level we know that God is all love and mercy but so often there are irrational corners of our souls who are far from convinced!

In my own life I find it humorous how God moved me to living by faith despite at times being absolutely crippled by fear and anxiety. And yet that’s God, He chooses weak imperfect people, He asks them to do things beyond what they feel able at times because He wants to teach then that it’s not their ability that matters but rather His grace!

Don’t let fear rule your life, sure it will slow you down for as long as the Lord allows but going slow is better than not going at all.

May Jesus bless u with faith, patience and perseverence today!
