Last night Rayne and I went to the cinema which thanks to God’s providence was free!!!
We went to see “House of Gucci” which is a film about the Gucci family and fashion empire.
Now I can’t say that I was familiar with the story before the film because living on providence and dressing on providence has kept me well away from brands such as Gucci and the high end fashion industry.
Yet the film was an eye-opening experience into how the quest for money and power led to the breaking up of the entire family and eventually even murder.
John chapter 10 verse 10 says that
John 10:10. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” and let’s just say that this is exactly what happened in the Gucci family.
Of course most of us don’t come from such wealthy families but yet the same type of things happen.
How many families have been torn apart over things like wills, inheritance, houses, money, sibling rivalry etc. and how far away all of this is from Jesus’ promise for us to have “life, and have it to the full” (still John 10:10).
Ultimately justice was done in the film as it was in real life with the family losing the entire business and the murderer ending up in prison where she still is now.
In a way the ending was like what we might imagine the final judgement to be like with all the good and evil of our lives exposed and then a reward or punishment afterwards…
And yet as the film progressed it was obvious that at any time it could have all been resolved by the power of forgiveness and simply walking away from the entire situation.
Sadly, power and greed blind people and just as Satan tempted Jesus in the desert with power and wealth so does he continue to tempt us too!
So what’s the solution then?
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36
The solution is obvious! Repentance and changing one’s life and doing one’s best to right any wrongs that one has done to others or to society just like Zaccheus in the gospel in Luke 19:8.
“I want to do good. I will give half of my money to the poor. If I have cheated anyone, I will pay them back four times more.”
And this doesn’t just refer to money. There are lots of ways that we can steal from others. We can steal their reputation through lies and gossip, we can steal their dignity and good name through slander and so on and so on!
Yet, Jesus who is forever merciful and loving calls us to forgiveness, reconciliation and justice and at the same time warns us of the consequences if we persevere in our evil like Mrs Gucci.
So what can we do then?!
1. Put right any wrongs that we have and
2. Just like St. Therese we can pray for these people in prison that they receive and accept the grace of conversion and repentance less their prison sentence be extended in the next life!
And as it happens, today at Saint Mary of the angels in Notting Hill there will be am afternoon of healing with mass, confession, healing adoration and prayer for the world and so the ideal opportunity to trade our Gucci and Prada’s with a sackcloth and ashes as we see our hearts on the riches of heaven rather than the passing vanities of this world!
Have a gucciful day🤣🤣
